Finding Purpose in This Life
by 2002 (c) Elizabeth Varian
"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you." Isaiah 60:1 (NIV)
Lately my mind has been plagued with questions concerning my life's purpose. My heart grows heavy as I wait for the answers. I have prayed and prayed, but my impatient nature demands an immediate answer. Life on earth is short and I want to be able to say that I have helped many lives find peace and eternity in our Lord. I have contributed funds to ministries and charities, but is there more? I wish God would say to me, "Elizabeth, this is your job here on earth", and then assign me a specific task. I desire to feed the homeless and help create happy endings for unexpected pregnancies. I want to feel that I have accomplished something for His kingdom at the end of the day.
I am practically begging God to deliver a packaged deal in the mail that would fulfill my desires. And now I read, "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you." Where are the words, "Elizabeth, check your mail, your package has arrived?" They are not there... or are they?
Wait a minute, they are there! "Arise, shine..." that is me! God is answering my prayers. My light has come, and the glory of the Lord is upon me. That is His promise to me. And reading further it says, "See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light and kings to the brightness of your dawn." Isaiah 60:2-3 (NIV)
God has a purpose for me. I am to arise and shine.
Heavenly Father, I joyfully pray a prayer of thanksgiving. Thank you for choosing me to be your light. Thank you for your glory that "arises upon" me. I will arise, I will shine, and I will patiently wait for those doors of opportunity that you open for me. I will obediently walk through them. In Jesus' name, Amen
